RUTH - Chapter 4:1-22
ACT IV sci - city gate of BETHLEHEM, House of Bread
1. Now Boaz went up to the meeting place at Bethlehem's gate and sat down there, and when the kinsman-redeemer, the relative of whom Boaz spoke was passing by, Boaz called to him, "Come over here, my friend, and sit down here." So he went over and sat down by Boaz. {Stage directions are within this verse.}
2. Then Boaz took ten men of the city's leaders and said, "Sit down here." So they sat down where Boaz indicated. {Stage directions are within this verse.}
3. Then Boaz said to his closest relative, "The parcel of land which used to belong to our relative Elimelech is being offered for sale by Naomi, who has returned from the land of Moab. 4. So I thought I should let you know. Now then, if you want to buy it then say it, "In the presence of the people and in the presence of the leaders of my people who are sitting here, I want to redeem Elimelech's inheritance.' If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if not, then tell me that I may know; for there is no one but you to redeem it, because the right to buy it belongs first to you and then to me."
And the nearest kinsman said, "I will redeem it."
5. Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, in order to raise up the name of the dead man to his inheritance."
6. And the kinsman-redeemer said, "I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I jeopardize my own inheritance by marrying Ruth, the Moabitess. Redeem it for yourself; you {may have} my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem it."
7. Now in those days, to settle a sale or an exchange of property, it was the custom for the seller to take off his sandal and give it to the buyer. In this way the Israelites showed that the matter was settled.
8. So the closest relative said to Boaz, "Buy it for yourself." And he removed his sandal and gave it to Boaz. {Stage directions are within this verse}.
9. Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, "You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon. 10. In addition, Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlon's widow, becomes my wife. This will keep the property in the dead man's family, and his family line will continue among his people and in his hometown. You are witnesses to this today."
11. And all the people who were in the court, and the leaders, said, "Yes. We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and may you achieve wealth in Ephrathah and become famous in Bethlehem. 12. Moreover, may your house be like the house of Perez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the offspring which the Lord shall give you by this young woman." {Everyone except Boaz, Ruth, and Naomi read this in unison}.
ACT IV scii - The Home of Boaz
13. So Boaz took Ruth home as his wife. The Lord blessed her, and she became pregnant and had a son.
ACT IV sciii - The Home of Boaz, 9 or more months later
14. Then the women said to Naomi, "Blessed is Adonai who has not left you without a redeemer today, and may his name become famous in Israel. 15. Your daughter-in-law loves you and has done more for you than seven sons. And now she has given you a grandson who will bring new life to you and give you security in your old age." {All women except Naomi and Ruth read this in unison}.
16. Then Naomi took the child, and held him close, and took care of him.
17. And the neighbor women gave him a name, saying, "A son has been born to Naomi!" So they named him Obed, which means servant. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18.Now these are the generations of Perez: to Perez was born Hezron,
19.and to Hezron was born Ram, and to Ram, Amminadab,
20.and to Amminadab was born Nahshon, and to Nahshon, Salmon,
21.and to Salmon was born Boaz, and to Boaz, Obed,
22.and to Obed was born Jesse, and to Jesse, David.
